What is DOI?
DOI (Digital Object Identifier) is a standardized persistent digital object identifier used to support the publication of research results. It represents a stable reference to specific digital content (e.g. scholarly articles, books, images or data files). Just as ISBN uniquely identifies printed books on a global scale, DOI uniquely identifies digital objects on the World Wide Web – on an international scale. Above all, it ensures that the cited material will be traceable in the long term, even if its location on the Internet or the structure of the website changes.
What can the DOI be used for?
- Unambiguous document identification: the DOI allows you to pinpoint a specific digital object (e.g., an article, book, image, or data file), even if there are multiple versions or similar objects
- Permanent linking: serves as a stable web link that remains functional even if the web address of the object changes
- Correct citation: the DOI is part of the citation standards, ensuring accurate and internationally understandable identification of the source
- Searching expert resources: by entering the DOI into a search engine or expert database, the object can be quickly found without the need to know the title or author
With these features, DOI enhances the clarity, credibility and professionalism of working with resources.
What does DOI look like?
The DOI identifier has the following form doi 10.83135/xyz123456 and consists of two parts:
- prefix (10.83135) is a number that uniquely identifies the institution that has assigned the DOI number to the digital object (e.g. JAMU). Prefixes are assigned to institutions by the so-called registration agency (e.g. DataCite).
- sufix (xyz123456) is an arbitrary character string that uniquely identifies a digital object within a given institution. Suffixes are assigned by the institution itself so that no two different digital objects are assigned the same DOI and no digital object is assigned more than one DOI at the same time.
JAMU prefix is 10.83135. Sufix is an automatically generated alphanumeric string at JAMU.
DOI allocation at JAMU
The JAMU Library in cooperation with the vice-deans for research of individual faculties was responsible for the allocation of DOIs at JAMU. To be assigned a DOI, the output must be located in the university repository in the JAMU IS. The metadata (descriptive data) of the object must also be published here. The correctness and completeness of the metadata is checked by the Vice-Deans, who then request the library staff to assign the DOI. After the DOI is assigned by the librarian, the DOI is entered into the repository in the JAMU IS and communicated to the applicants.
In case you are interested in receiving a DOI, please contact the Vice-Dean for Research and Other Creative Activities of the Faculty of Arts JAMU by your school e-mail Mgr. Jana Kořínková, Ph.D. (DF) or the Vice-Dean for Science, Research and Strategy of the JAMU Faculty of Arts doc. PhDr. Petr Lyk, Ph.D. et Ph.D. (HF).
